What is Registry Data Escrow?
All ICANN-accredited registry operators are required to deposit registry data with an approved Registry Data Escrow (RDE) provider.
Registry Data Escrow ensures that critical domain registration data is securely stored and can be recovered if a registry operator becomes unable to operate its TLD. This requirement protects domain registrants, ensures internet stability, and maintains continuity of registry operations under the ICANN Registry Agreement.
What Registry Data Escrow Includes
Domain Registration Data
Authoritative name servers for the TLD zone with global anycast distribution.
Registrant Information
Contact details and registrant data for all domain holders

DNS Information
Zone files and DNS configuration data for registry operations

Nameserver Records
Complete nameserver delegation and routing information

Why Registry Data Escrow is Required
ICANN requires registry operators to regularly deposit their domain registration database with an approved escrow provider. These escrow deposits allow ICANN to restore registry operations if a registry fails or is terminated.
Protects Domain Registrants
Ensures domain owners' rights are preserved even if registry operations are disrupted
Internet Stability
Maintains DNS resolution and internet connectivity for all domains in the TLD

Continuity of Operations
Enables seamless transition to backup operators without data loss or downtime
RSP Evaluation
How Registry Data Escrow Works
As part of our New gTLD Consulting services, we help applicants compare providers across six critical dimensions.
1. Registry Generates Secure Data Deposit
The registry operator creates a complete snapshot of all domain registration data, formatted according to ICANN specifications.
3. Escrow Provider Verifies Data Integrity
The escrow provider validates the deposit format, completeness, and integrity to ensure it meets ICANN requirements.
2. Encrypted Transmission to Escrow Provider
The deposit is encrypted using industry-standard protocols and securely transmitted to the approved Registry Data Escrow provider.
4. ICANN Receives Confirmation
ICANN is notified that the escrow deposit was successfully stored, ensuring ongoing compliance with registry agreement terms.
